Project Officer – French in Our Homes

About the organization

The Congolese Community of Hamilton and Area (CCH) is a vibrant community based in the heart of the city of Hamilton, Canada. Made up mostly of nationals of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), it stands out for its commitment to bilingualism and multiculturalism, in keeping with Canada’s inclusive approach. As the DRC is the main country of origin of francophone immigrants to Hamilton, the CCH is ideally positioned to foster linguistic and cultural inclusion in French and English.

Project description

French in Our Homes is an initiative to support Congolese families who have recently arrived in Canada, often as asylum seekers, and who face major language challenges. These families struggle to support their children in French-language schools and to take part in community life.

Main responsibilities

The Project Officer will: 1. Set up a language mentoring network within the community. 2. Recruit francophone mentors to support families. 3. Organize and facilitate mentor training, taking into account the realities and needs of immigrant families. 4. Help create learning materials suited to the family and cultural context of participants.

Desired profile

• French / English bilingualism required.

• Proficiency in at least one of the national languages of the DRC (Swahili, Lingala, Kikongo or Tshiluba).

• Experience in community work, education or project management is an asset.

• Strong organizational skills, independence and excellent intercultural communication skills.

Working conditions

• Hourly rate: $20/hour

• Work location: Hamilton, Ontario
